Obituary for Grace Schiller (Gray)

Grace Schiller passed away Wednesday, November 28, 2018, in a Temple hospital. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Grace's life on Sunday, December 2 at Oscar Store from 5 to 7 p.m. Private family service will be held at a later date at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.

Grace was born October 14, 1921, in Corpus Christi, Texas. She met the love of her life, Rudolph Schiller, when he was stationed at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi during World War II. Rudy was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in March 1946, and the couple was married on June 6, 1946, by Pastor Roy A. Langston at First Methodist Church in Temple.

Grace was a housewife while Rudy farmed in the Oscar area for many years. She also worked at nearby stores and at Oscar Store. Grace and Rudy purchased and reopened Oscar Store in 1973. Together, they operated the store every day until the store was destroyed by a fire on April 28, 2006.

The couple lived outside of Temple until they moved to Oscar in the early 1980s. After 62 years of marriage, Rudy passed away on March 2, 2009.

Grace’s personality was one-of-a-kind. She loved Oscar Store and all of the patrons, both while she and Rudy owned it and later under new owner Thomas Maddux after he rebuilt and reopened it in 2009. Grace enjoyed her beer while visiting with friends and reminiscing the good days and times. She touched generations of people with her wit and passion for life.

Grace was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. She was of Catholic faith.

She was preceded in death by husband Rudolph Schiller and his family – brothers-in-law Edwin Schiller in 1979, Gus Schiller in 1989, and Johnnie Schiller in 1992, sister-in-law Evelyn Henson in 2018, and nephew Albert Schiller in 2018.

She is survived by sister-in-law Martha Zavodny and husband Milton; nieces Debbie Veselka, Faye Hudson, Shirley Tuerck, and Melanie Zavodny; nephews Marvin Schiller and David Schiller; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family thanks the staff at Weston Inn in Temple for its care of Aunt Grace. The family also expresses appreciation to two angels who entered Aunt Grace’s life after Uncle Rudy passed away. Thomas Maddux and Lorianne Bland loved and cared for Aunt Grace so tenderly, ensuring that she was happy and that all of her needs were taken care of. May God richly bless Thomas and Lorianne for their compassion.

Beautiful memories are silently kept, of an Aunt we loved dearly and will never forget.
