Obituary for George Franklin Wingard Jr.
George F. Wingard Jr. a lifetime resident of Navasota passed from this life on the evening of Saturday, May 13th at the Scott and White hospital in Temple, Texas. A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at the Madeley Chapel of Oakland Cemetery in Navasota starting at 1:00PM. In lieu of flowers please make memorials to: William R. George was born August 8, 1924, the son of George F. Wingard Sr. and Minnie Estelle Manly. At the age of 19 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, and after training, was assigned as an aircraft mechanic and top turret gunner of a B-17 crew based in southern Italy. He flew 50 missions all over southern Europe, including the famous raid against the oil fields of Romania. When he returned from service, he worked several years for several Navasota auto dealers before opening his own shop and garage. Soon after his return from service he married Lillian Fay Mayes of Shiro, who passed away in 2004.
He is preceded in death by his wife Lillian Fay (Mayes) Wingard, his parents George Sr and Minnie Wingard and his brother Don Wingard.
George is survived by his only daughter Elise Estelle Poole and husband Lt. Cdr. Ret. James Louis Poole, his two granddaughters Heather Poole Lieberman and husband Neil of Redondo Beach, CA and Holly Emmalyn Allen of Highland Park, TX, his three great-grandchildren Cosmo George Lieberman, Layla Emmalyn Allen and Harlow Fay Allen, his sister Betty Sue Morgan and husband Jerry Dale Sr. of Franklin, his nephews Joe H. Bush and wife Janie (son Joe Andrew Bush) of Colorado and Jerry Dale Morgan Jr. and his three nieces Sherry Morgan, KK Morgan and Deborah Morgan.
